Learn how to make a dark, hypnotic Afro & Melodic House track inspired by Samm and Ajna in this complete Ableton Live production tutorial (Tutorial #3 from our MAGNIFIED 2 series).
Samm and Ajna are known for hypnotic grooves, emotional melodies, and minimal but powerful productions. In this breakdown, we focus on a high-attack percussion groove, a 3-layer Serum 2 low end, six interlocking synth presets, and one simple tension piano note that gives the entire track its identity.
What you will learn
1. High-Attack Kick, Toms, Cowbell & 5 Percussion/Hat Loops
We begin with a punchy kick whose subtle high-end attack helps it cut cleanly through dark club mixes:
• Toms & 2 Primary Percussion Loops: Rolling toms establish the low-mid groove while two interlocking percussion loops generate most of the syncopated movement.
• 3 Hat Layers & Cowbell Loop: Three simple hi-hat loops add steady 16th-note energy, topped off with a woody cowbell loop that introduces one final rhythmic voice without overcrowding the drums.
2. Three-Layer Bass Architecture (Presets: BS – Vortex, BS – Grit & BS – Murk)
The low end stacks three custom Serum 2 bass presets from MAGNIFIED 2 so you get both sub weight and midrange bite:
• BS – Vortex (Sustained Sub Foundation): Anchors the bottom end with deep, mono-locked sub pressure.
• BS – Grit & BS – Murk (Mid-Bass Texture & Movement): Layered above the sub to add harmonic growl, rhythmic bounce, and analog character while leaving plenty of headroom for the kick.
3. The Single-Note Tension Piano & 6 Serum 2 Synths (LD – Spiral, LD – Fever, LD – Hypnotic, PL – Ripple, PL – Tiny Bell & LD – Vertigo)
The most memorable element of this track is literally one carefully chosen repeating piano note that builds relentless tension, surrounded by six Serum 2 presets:
• Core Leads (LD – Spiral & LD – Fever): Establish the main hook alongside a supporting piano chord loop.
• Counter-Melodies & Plucks (LD – Hypnotic, PL – Ripple & PL – Tiny Bell): Add sparkling rhythmic detail around the single piano note.
• Climax Drop Lead (LD – Vertigo) & Atmospheres: LD – Vertigo commands the main drop over deep evolving atmosphere loops.
4. Studio Vocal Kit, Impacts, Uplifters, Risers & Snare Roll
To turn the hypnotic groove into a full club arrangement, we bring in one of the 4 professionally studio-recorded human vocal kits from MAGNIFIED 2.
• Transition FX: Deep sub impacts, sweeping uplifters, tension risers, and a tight pre-drop snare roll connect every section smoothly.
