Learn how to make deep, groovy, and hypnotic Afro & Melodic House inspired by HotLap in this step-by-step Ableton Live production tutorial (Tutorial #1 from our MAGNIFIED 2 series).
In this breakdown, we inspect every channel of our HotLap-inspired construction kit and project file from MAGNIFIED 2 – Afro & Melodic House Sample Pack—showing you the exact drum layers, pitch-bent dual bassline, unison leads with strings and piano, plucks, and real studio vocals.
What you will learn
1. Organic Drum Groove (Kick, Toms, Shaker, 2 Hats, Cowbell, Clap Fill & Noise Texture)
We start with a punchy Afro & Melodic House kick and immediately build forward movement with seven complementary percussion channels:
• Tom Loop & Cowbell Loop: Establish the warm low-mid bounce and woody off-beat syncopation.
• Shaker Loop & 2 Hat Loops: Supply continuous 16th-note swing and crisp top-end sheen.
• Short Clap Fill & White Noise Texture Loop: A snappy clap fill marks the 4- and 8-bar turnarounds while a subtle white-noise texture loop adds analog air across the drum bus.
2. Two-Layer Bassline with Pitch-Bend Movement Trick (Presets: BS – Weird & BS – Rumble)
To get HotLap’s signature elastic, rolling low end, we layer two custom Serum 2 bass presets from MAGNIFIED 2:
• BS – Weird + BS – Rumble: Locked together in unison so BS – Rumble provides the deep mono sub foundation while BS – Weird adds mid-bass character.
• The Automated Pitch-Bend Trick: At the end of the bass phrase, we automate the MIDI Pitch Bend wheel to create a hypnotic upward/downward glide that makes the groove feel alive right before the kick hits.
3. Dual Leads, Strings, Piano & Plucks (LD – Mirage, LD – Voltage, PL – Drip & PL – Echo)
The melodic section blends warm acoustic instruments with four custom Serum 2 synth patches:
• 2-Layer Main Lead (LD – Mirage & LD – Voltage): Stacked in unison for a rich, emotional lead hook, supported underneath by lush strings and piano chords.
• First Pluck (PL – Drip) & Stab Pluck (PL – Echo): PL – Drip drives the hypnotic arpeggiated rhythm, while PL – Echo adds reverberant stab accents over 1 texture loop and 2 deep atmosphere loops.
4. Studio Vocal Kit, Impacts, Short Fills & Full DAW Project File
We bring the entire arrangement together with one of the 4 professionally recorded human vocal kits from MAGNIFIED 2, framed by 2 deep impacts and a short drum fill.
• Study the Exact Project File: Because this exact track is included as a complete project file for Ableton Live, FL Studio, and Logic Pro using only Serum 2 and stock plugins, you can open it directly in your DAW and inspect every automation lane.
